Another tectonic tidbit - whenever we passed a rift there was visible line across the roadway. It marked a location requiring caution and regular repaving to address cracks. The rift spreads approx 2cm per year (.8in). Science!
On the right side of the photo, the lower plain is part of the Atlantic Continental Plate. On the left, the higher plain is the Eurasian Continental Plate. The rift is widening as the US drifts further from Europe ( hmm, that might be political).
