Solheimajokull Glacier

Ice, Ice Baby ...

We visited the  Solheimajokull Glacier in southern Iceland yesterday. It lies between the Katla and Eijafjallajökkull* volcanos.

*Say that 3 times fast. OK, say it /once/ !
The "Big E", as it's known, was the volcano whose 2010 eruption shut down European air travel for a week.

  1. I'm struck by the similarity of the smooth surfaces of these glaciers and floes to the "frozen in time" volcanic stone a few entries back - the smooth basalt flows. On this planet, ice and stone can create similar forms from seemingly opposite forces. [report this back to the mother ship]
