Langostines and Bankers Behind Bars

Upon landing we met Raki, our driver all last week, and headed for lunch at Hofnin where we enjoyed a tasty soup of langostine and shrimp.

Although lunch was excellent, the real treat was a presentation by Magnuson Sveinn Helgason, an historian and expert on the Icelandic financial crisis and national bankruptcy of 2008 (https://edda.hi.is/research/researchers/magnus-sveinn-helgason/).

Beginning with an overview of the Icelandic economy, its cultural foundation and societal effects, Magnus detailed the lead up to Iceland's financial meltdown and the successful unravelling of their banking crisis
Although speaking for nearly an hour, his style and wit truly kept us entertained and informed. The presentation was called "Bankers Behind Bars' because in contrast to the US and EU response, the financial  parties responsible were actually convicted, while most individual homeowners and investors were helped.

  1. Looks like a charming spot for lunch and lecture. Wow, holding financial manipulators legally responsible? Amazing story. Could never sell that film plot in the US.
